It’s finally summer! And, like every year, your clients probably started to think about their summer hygiene once it was already hot. Many women don’t think about a permanent solution for body hair until they start to wear shorts and skirts again in the spring.

Shaving is time-consuming, waxing is a pain and is expensive over timeplus, the hair grows back. Laser hair removal is a great way to get rid of unwanted hair and keep it away. Hair removal for legs, arms, underarms, and the bikini area can make summer a lot more enjoyable. Yet there is a common misconception that laser hair removal can only be done in the fall or winter. This isn’t true! Here’s what you need to know about laser hair removal during the summer.

Types of Lasers for Hair Removal

The best equipment to use for hair removal are Nd:YAG, Alexandrite and Diode systems. Nd:YAG and Alexandrite lasers are great all-around tools for medspas because they can also be used to offer skin rejuvenation and treating sun damage, while Diode lasers are just for hair removal.

Nd:YAG lasers are safe for all skin types and still work on clients who already have tanned or naturally dark skin. This makes laser hair removal procedures not impossible for clients who have been out in the sun. And because the wavelength of this laser is not highly absorbed by melanin and bypasses the epidermis, it works well on women of color and darker skin tones.

Tanned Skin vs. Laser Hair Removal

The heat from the laser is delivered directly to the hair follicle and damages it, causing the hair to grow back finer and lighter. It is true that, in general, laser hair removal targets the pigment in hair follicles and works best on clients with dark hair and a lighter skin tone. Therefore, laser hair removal is usually not recommended during summer months because tanned skin will make finding the hair pigment more difficult.

Independent of the type of device used, it will require multiple treatment sessions to get the best results no matter the season. Laser hair removal treats actively growing hairs and they are all at different points of the growing cycle. This is why it will take a few treatments to obtain completely smooth skin. If they have already started the hair removal process, it is likely that additional treatments will be needed to continue through the summer season. In this case, clients will still see results even during the summer.

So, tell your existing clientele that it is not too late to schedule an appointment for laser hair removal this season. However, if they are looking to start laser hair removal treatment, we recommend waiting until the fall or winter to see the best initial results.

Avoiding Sun Exposure Before & After Laser Treatment

Laser technicians need to advise their customers to avoid sun exposure in the days directly before and following a hair removal session. After an energy treatment, the skin will be very sensitive to UV rays. The skin is more vulnerable to sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and burning.

Tips for Successful Laser Hair Removal in the Summer

Here are some recommendations to give to clients during this season:

  • Protect the lasered part of the body from direct sunlight for at least 5 – 14 days after treatment.
  • Avoid tanning outside, tanning beds, and self-tanning products for a few days following hair removal.
  • Use sunscreen with a strong level of protection in the days directly before and after treatment. Wearing SPF 30 or SPF 50 will help prevent sunburn and sun damage.
  • Moisturize and hydrate the skin daily.

You can also let clients know that it’s perfectly safe to shave any regrowth or unwanted hair between sessions. It will not negatively affect the hair follicle or make follow-up sessions less effective.

Though it’s possible to have laser treatments during the summer, it is necessary to be extra vigilant and safeguard skin that has been made sensitive by lasering. For this reason, you may want to recommend that patients with very fair skin tones wait until the fall to have hair removal services.
